Short-term (month-to-month) plans give you flexibility — the best choice when you’ve just arrived and aren’t sure how long you’ll stay or how much data you’ll use. Longer 3-, 6-, or 12-month terms lower your effective monthly cost, and there’s no annual-contract penalty if you leave. All four Panda Mobile plans offer both, so the smart move is to match the term to your certainty — not just chase the lowest sticker price.
When you’re choosing a U.S. phone plan, there are really two questions hiding inside the price. The first is which plan — how much data and what features you need. The second is quieter but just as important: how long should you commit for? A shorter term costs a little more each month but keeps you free; a longer term costs less per month but asks you to plan ahead. Getting this second choice right can save you money without locking you into something that stops fitting your life.
Short-term: pay month to month
A short-term plan renews one month at a time. You pay a little more per month than you would on a longer term, but you get the thing that matters most when everything is new: flexibility.
In Panda Mobile’s own words: if you want to try it first, sign up for just one month and decide whether to continue — there’s no annual-contract penalty if you leave. You can change plans or cancel as your needs change.
Short-term is the right call when: you’ve just landed and aren’t sure how long you’ll stay; you’re still learning how much data you actually use; or you’re here for a short visit or a single season.
Long-term: choose a 3-, 6-, or 12-month term
A longer term means you pay for several months at once. In return, your effective monthly price drops — the longer the term, the lower it goes. It’s the “set it and forget it” choice: one decision, then months of not thinking about your phone bill.
And it’s lower-risk than it sounds. A longer term is really prepaying for a discount, not signing a locked contract — there’s still no annual-contract penalty if your plans change and you need to stop.
Long-term is the right call when: you know you’re staying for the school year or longer; you’ve settled on the plan that fits you; and you’d rather save money than keep month-to-month flexibility.
The plans at a glance
All plans run on the T-Mobile network. Here’s the 1-month price for each; remember that longer terms bring the effective monthly cost down.
| Plan | Price / month* | Data | Works in China? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lite | $15 | 3 GB | No — U.S. only | Lowest cost, U.S.-only use |
| Starter | $25 | 6 GB | No | U.S. use plus low-cost calls to China |
| Unlimited | $35 | Unlimited (15 GB premium 5G) | Yes — OnePool | The “two countries” plan |
| Unlimited Plus | $45 | Unlimited (30 GB premium 5G) | Yes — OnePool | Heavy data across both countries |
*1-month price. Choosing a 3-, 6-, or 12-month term lowers your effective monthly cost — see the plans page for current term pricing.
One thing to keep in mind: OnePool — the feature that lets your U.S. number and data work in China with no roaming fee — is on Unlimited and Unlimited Plus only. If staying reachable in China matters to you, that choice comes before the short-vs-long-term question.
So, which should you choose?
- Just landed and unsure? Start month-to-month. Learn your real usage first, then switch to a longer term once you’re settled.
- Here for the school year? A 6- or 12-month term usually gives the best value, since you already know roughly how long you’ll need it.
- Family or long-term resident? The 12-month term gives the lowest effective monthly cost for people who are staying put.
- Need your number to work in China? Choose Unlimited or Unlimited Plus first (for OnePool), then pick the term that matches how long you’ll keep it.
Students: use the dedicated student sign-up link with a .edu email to get the student discount. No .edu address yet? WeChat customer support can verify you manually. (Signing up from the regular page won’t apply the discount.)
You’re not locked in
Whichever way you go, you keep room to change. You can move between plans as your needs shift, and you can pause or cancel — there’s no annual-contract penalty. Just keep your account active to hold on to your number: if payments lapse for about four months, the account closes and the number is lost.
